Exuma

Great Exuma is an easily reachable destination by plane directly from U.S.A., Canada or Nassau. Just 75 min. flying time from Florida await islands so pristine and unspoiled that you feel as if you were a world away. The Exuma Islands consist of a group of some 365 cays and islands stretching over 120 miles with the two main islands, Great Exuma and Little Exuma, to the south. Exuma boasts of pristine reefs, stunning beaches and excellent mooring possibilities. It is also home to the Caribbean area’s first marine reserve. Here is the 176 sq. mile “Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park”, the world’s first land and sea area to be declared a protected national park.

The average year-round temperature is 75-85 F (25-30 C), and the rolling hills, wide sandy beaches and brilliant, clear “Exuma-blue” waters give life to some of the earth’s more spectacular reefs/fish. Due to the very strong blue turquoise colour, it actually was the first waters the astronauts noticed when they first time returned to earth from out of space. Snorkelers will find the wide, shallow coastal region teeming with life and easy to explore the huge coral reef in Exuma Sound with numerous caves, blue holes and shipwrecks.

George Town on Great Exuma is the main city of The Exuma Islands. Visit the straw market for some authentic Bahamian crafts and enjoy the architecture of the Government Administrations Building. Walk around George Town – enjoy the atmosphere, shops, restaurants, grocery stores, and local businesses that encircle the lake. Have some cracked conch and drink a Kalik (The Bahamas’ own beer) or a Bahama Mama. Every year in late April, George Town’s Elizabeth Harbour hosts the annual week-long Family Island Regatta.
